In its revised code of 1908 the R&A ruled that it would not sanction any substantial departure from the traditional form and make of golf clubs. When Allan Robertson (see above) of the R&A saw that golfing would not be ruined by the gutta-percha ball, he realized the value of iron clubs for approach shots and made a cleek for steadier putting. The most prestigious tournaments for nonprofessionals are the British Amateur Championship and the United States Amateur Championship. For professionals the coveted Grand Slam tournaments are the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship (British Open), and the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Championship.
